Careers Education at Compton Dundon School

At Compton Dundon School, careers education is an integral part of preparing our pupils for adult life. We recognise that many of our learners require additional time, structure and support to build confidence in themselves and their future. Our careers programme is therefore carefully planned to develop self-esteem, resilience, motivation and realistic aspiration, while promoting inclusion, equality of opportunity and independence.

Careers learning is embedded across the curriculum and wider school life. Pupils are supported to explore their strengths, interests and ambitions, while developing the employability and life skills they will need to thrive beyond school. Our approach reflects the individual needs of our pupils and is adapted to ensure learning is meaningful, accessible and relevant.

Careers Development in Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2, careers education focuses on broadening horizons and challenging stereotypes. Pupils learn about different jobs and roles through assemblies, visitors to school and educational visits. They begin to develop key skills such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving, which form the foundation for employability later in their education. Early exposure to the world of work helps pupils understand that there are many possible futures open to them.

Careers Development in Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3, careers education becomes more personalised and reflective. Pupils are encouraged to develop self-awareness and consider their interests, strengths and aspirations. Through assemblies, curriculum links, PSHE, Life Skills and engagement with visitors from a range of employment sectors, pupils learn how school subjects connect to real careers. They are introduced to local labour market information and begin to explore pathways such as further education, apprenticeships and vocational routes, supported by external careers guidance where appropriate.

Working with Employers and the Wider Community

We actively work with employers and external partners to enrich our careers provision. Visitors to the school provide talks, workshops, mentoring opportunities and real-world insights into different industries. Where appropriate, pupils are offered supported work-related experiences that help them understand expectations, develop confidence and build employability skills in a safe and structured way. Employers also play a key role in helping us challenge barriers such as stereotyping and supporting positive outcomes for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.

Preparing for the Future

Our careers programme aims to support every pupil to move forward with confidence into the next stage of their education or training. By combining high-quality careers education, meaningful experiences and personalised support, we help our pupils develop the skills, attitudes and self-belief needed to become successful, independent adults and valued members of their community.
