Our English curriculum develops confident readers, writers and communicators through a carefully sequenced programme that builds knowledge, vocabulary and skills progressively across KS2 and KS3.
In KS2, pupils study a wide range of texts including traditional stories, modern fiction, poetry and non-fiction. They are taught grammar, spelling and vocabulary explicitly and apply these skills through writing such as narratives, reports and persuasive pieces. Reading lessons focus on comprehension skills including inference, prediction and summarising, alongside structured discussion.
In KS3, pupils develop more analytical and independent skills. They study more complex texts, including The Tempest by Shakespeare and selected Sherlock Holmes stories, exploring themes, language and writer’s intent. Writing becomes more structured and sophisticated, with continued emphasis on accuracy, vocabulary and confident expression through discussion and debate.
